Occupational Therapy at “Work”, A doctoral capstone considering the impact of therapy services at work, job coach training, and sustainable programming.

Description

This presentation outlines my doctoral capstone experience focused on integrating occupational therapy (OT) services into supported employment settings for individuals with disabilities. It especially focused on supporting those with mental health diagnoses employed through microbusinesses at Optimae Rehabilitation Services. Grounded in an occupation-based and evidence-informed approach, this project explored the role of OT in promoting inclusive work environments and improving long-term employment outcomes. The presentation will review current literature that reveals disparities in workforce participation and highlight the need for interdisciplinary support to address barriers such as stigma, limited workplace accommodations, and lack of sustainable employment supports.

Participants will be introduced to the unique contributions of occupational therapy within employment settings, including interventions targeting cognitive, social, emotional, motor, and environmental factors that influence job performance. The presentation will also describe the development and implementation of a pilot OT program within a local organization. It discusses the creation of referral processes, evaluation tools, and intervention strategies tailored to meet workplace demands.

In addition, this session will emphasize the importance of staff education, advocacy, and program sustainability in expanding OT’s role in nontraditional practice areas. Attendees will gain insight into practical strategies for fostering inclusive workplace cultures and supporting employee independence. This course is designed for healthcare professionals, educators, and employment specialists interested in enhancing participation and quality of life for individuals with disabilities through meaningful work.
